Waves Defeat Eastern Washington in Home Opener

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women's basketball team downed Eastern Washington 67-48 on Sunday afternoon in Firestone Fieldhouse for its home opener. 

The Waves (1-1) never trailed the Eagles (0-2) in the contest. 

BIG WAVES
  • Redshirt junior forward Eve Braslis (Newton, Victoria, Australia/Geelong College/Utah Valley) led the Waves with 15 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and had two steals.
  • Senior guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 10 points and had two assists. 
  • Redshirt junior forward Becky Obinma (Manifee, Calif./Rosary Academy/Texas Christian) had 10 points, shooting 4-for-6 and had nine rebounds. 
  • Senior guard Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./Serra HS/Los Angeles Trade-Tech) had eight points, three rebounds and two assists. 
GAME RECAP

The Waves got off to a hot start, scoring the first six points and then taking a 12-5 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. After back and forth shots from the Eagles and Waves, the Waves finished the first quarter with a five-point lead at 17-12.

In the second quarter, Eastern Washington went on a four-point scoring run to get within one point, 17-16. The Waves then took back control and went on an eight-point scoring run to extend the lead to 25-16. Pepperdine went into the half with a nine point lead at 32-23.

After the half, it was all Waves through the third quarter. The Waves continued to extend the lead and were up 39-25 with under seven left to go. After another eight-point scoring run by the Waves, the lead got larger and Pepperdine was up 53-31. The Eagles cut down the margin as the quarter ended, but the Waves were still up 53-36. 

In the final quarter, Pepperdine scored the first 13 points to reach the largest lead in the game at 66-36. Eastern Washington tried to make a comeback run and went on an eight-point scoring run with under three minutes left. The Waves went on to win its home opener by a 19-point margin.
