#5 BYU Downs Pepperdine in Provo

PROVO, Utah — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team, a team receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll this week, was downed in three by #5 BYU on Thursday night, 25-15, 25-17, 25-8.Â

This was the first time the Waves have been downed in straight-sets, as Pepperdine drops to 18-5 overall and 10-5 in the West Coast Conference.

BYU was strong on all fronts in Provo throughout the match, leading with 42 kills on a .354 hitting percentage, while allowing Pepperdine 25 kills on a .008 output. The Cougars also added six aces, 54 digs and 6.0 blocks, while the Waves posted two aces, 40 digs and 4.0 blocks.

Each side traded points to open the match 4-4, but the Cougars took it away shortly after, building a five-point lead 12-7 with a strong attacking presence. Though the Waves continued to fight throughout, BYU continued to expand the lead en route to a 25-15 first set victory.

Though the Cougars had the momentum at the end of the first, the Waves came out crashing in the second, building to a 5-4 lead. It stayed close as Rachel Ahrens continued to put kills down on the ground for the Waves, working to a 10-10 tied score. Rosie Ballo kept the Malibu Roofing Company in action as well, but the home team once again pulled ahead, eventually taking a strong lead and advancing to a 25-17 second set victory.

The Waves and Cougars traded the first few points, but BYU then went on a 13-0 run to make it 17-4 in the set. The home team continued with that energy to finish the match with a 25-8 final set score and the three-set victory.
