MALIBU, California – Jake Howerton of the #8 Pepperdine men's water polo team was named the Golden Coast Conference's Player of the Week after he scored 11 goals in three wins this past weekend, including a career-high five in the Waves' victory over #2 California.
Â
After scoring two goals against #17 Pomona-Pitzer, Howerton put in a career-high four later Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. He came back with his second career high in as many days with five goals against the Golden Bears on Sunday.
Â
Howerton had four first-half goals as the Waves built an 11-7 halftime lead against Cal. His fifth goal came in the fourth quarter just after Cal had tied the game at 13. That started a 3-0 run that saw the Waves go on to a 16-14 win. The victory was Pepperdine's first against a team ranked in the top two since 2008 (#2 Stanford), and extended the Waves' winning streak to four games.
Â
Howerton (Cardiff, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) is tied for second on the team with 27 goals.
Â
Pepperdine plays two games at California Baptist's Lancer Joust Tournament this Saturday (Oct. 9), facing the host Lancers at 10 a.m. and Concordia at 2:30 p.m.
