MALIBU, California – The 2022 Pepperdine baseball schedule was released today, as announced by head coach Rick Hirtensteiner, who enters his seventh year at the helm. This year the Waves will play a total of 51 games, with 24 away games and 27 games at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Â
The Waves open non-conference with a series against Villanova (February 18-20) at Eddy D. Field Stadium and then visit UCLA for one game on February 22. Pepperdine will then travel to the Lone Star State for the 2022 Kleberg Bank Classic hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi and play three games at Whataburger Field against Iowa (February 25), Wichita State (February 26) and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (February 27). Following the tournament, the Waves will stay in Texas and play Texas A&M Corpus Christi again (February 28) on its home turf.Â
Pepperdine will visit Cal State Fullerton for a weekend series (March 4-6) and then head to Long Beach State for a mid-week matchup (March 8). The Waves will head home to Eddy D. Field and host UConnn for a weekend series (March 11-13) and a single game matchup at home against Yale (March 15).Â
"As always the Waves will have a solid non-conference schedule in 2022," said Hirtensteiner. "The Waves will have weekend series vs. Cal State Fullerton, UConn, Villanova, and a tournament in Texas with Wichita State, Iowa, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Mid-week games vs. perennial powers UCLA, UCSB and Long Beach State will help with our non-conference strength of schedule and building a good RPI. Having a tough non-conference schedule is always the goal to best prepare the Waves to make a run at another conference championship."
The Waves open up West Coast Conference play at home with a weekend series versus San Diego (March 18-20). The rest of the conference schedule is as follows: vs. Pacific (March 25-27), at Gonzaga (April 1-3), at Saint Mary's (April 8-10), vs. San Francisco (April 14-16), at Santa Clara (April 22-24), vs. BYU (May 5-7), at Loyola Marymount (May 13-15), vs. Portland (May 20-22).
Pepperdine will also play non-conference midweek single games at CSU Bakersfield (March 22), vs. Long Beach (March 29), vs. UC Santa Barbara (April 5), vs. UCLA (April 12), vs. CSU Bakersfield (April 19), at UC Santa Barbara (May 3), at Cal Poly (May 10) and vs. Cal Poly (May 17).Â
"The WCC will be a tough conference with Gonzaga, San Diego and BYU returning strong teams. We have a good nucleus of returning players to compete for a WCC championship. Many of our players performed well in the summer and made gains in the off season," said Hirtensteiner.
Pepperdine returns 30 players from last year and brings in 11 freshmen.
