Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, California – Nico Tierney and
Jake Howerton both had four-goal games to lead the #12 Pepperdine men's water polo team to two road victories on Saturday at the Gary Troyer Tournament. The Waves beat #17 Pomona-Pitzer 18-8 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 15-10.
Pepperdine (9-7) has now won a season-best three games in a row.
BIG WAVES
- Sophomore attacker Jake Howerton (Cardiff, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) had a team-high six goals on the day, including four in the afternoon contest against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
- Sophomore Nico Tierney (Sierra Madre, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) posted five goals, with four coming in the first game against Pomona-Pitzer.
- Senior utility Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) and senior attacker Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary) both had totals of four goals, with Ferrari getting three against Pomona-Pitzer and Kosa scoring three times against CMS.
- Sophomore center Travis Reynolds (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Loyola HS) had a hat trick against the Sagehens.
GAME #1 RECAP
The Waves got off to a stellar start, as Ferrari scored both first-quarter goals, Pepperdine scored the first four goals of the game, and the Sagehens didn't get on the board for nearly 12 minutes. The Waves scored six times in the second quarter, two by Tierney, to make it 8-2 at the break. It was 12-6 after three quarters and Pepperdine added another six goals in the fourth quarter.

GAME #2 RECAP
The Waves didn't have the quite the same start later in the afternoon. After Tierney opened the scoring, the Stags notched the next three goals and took a 3-2 lead after one quarter. Pepperdine edged in front, 7-6 at halftime. Tied at seven, the Waves finally gave themselves some breathing room with five consecutive goals, two of them from Howerton. Pepperdine kept the Stags scoreless for nearly eight minutes. The Waves took a seven-goal lead at 15-8 on a Ferrari tally before CMS scored the final two.
