Waves Drop Game at Home to Santa Clara

MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team finished off its stretch of three games in four days on Sunday, falling to Santa Clara 66-57 in Firestone Fieldhouse. Monique Andriuolo led the Waves with 12 points.

The Waves (3-10, 0-9 WCC) kept it close with the Broncos (10-6, 6-4 WCC) for the first quarter, and had a chance to make another comeback in the fourth, but the Broncos didn't miss a free throw in the fourth quarter, putting the game away.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) led the Waves with 12 points on the day, and also led the Waves in rebounds, with seven.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Jayda Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) was the only other Wave in double digits, with 10 points.
  • Junior guard Cheyenne Givens (Gardena, Calif./LA Trade Tech) had nine points on the day. She also had three steals.
  • Redshirt-Senior center Tara Dusharm (Foley, Minn./St. Louis) had a season-high nine points.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
Sunday's game started much like Saturday's, with the Broncos scoring the first five points of the game. However, the Waves tied the game at five thanks to a Jayda Ruffus-Milner layup. The Waves then took the lead on a Dusharm free throw. The Broncos led 16-13 after the first quarter.

The Waves hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the lead at 21, and an Andriuolo layup gave the Waves a 23-21 lead. Santa Clara retook the lead and extended that lead to 33-26 at the half.

Santa Clara kept up the scoring after the break, going up by nine to start the half. The Waves fought all the way back to tie the game at 44, but a Broncos layup gave Santa Clara a 46-44 lead going into the final ten minutes of play. The fourth quarter was back and forth, with the Waves getting to within a point at 51-50, but Santa Clara did not miss a free throw the entire fourth quarter, not allowing the Waves to get back to within striking distance.
