MALIBU, California – Who are the best Waves ever to wear a particular number on their jersey or cap? This series will aim to identify the most accomplished Pepperdine student-athletes, number by number.
Today, the greats who wore
number 13 are listed.
First, some caveats:
- Student-athletes before a certain year may not be included, as complete numerical rosters only go back so far. For the eight sports that wear numbers, only women's soccer and women's beach volleyball have every roster available.
- The complete numerical rosters for baseball (1971), men's basketball (1968-69), women's basketball (1979-80), men's volleyball (1975), women's indoor volleyball (1976) and men's water polo (1982) date back to the year shown here.
- In some cases, additional standout student-athletes from prior to those years were identified.
- Any student-athlete who received at least all-conference honors during this time, and others of note, were included based on current available information.
- Pepperdine sponsored football between the years of 1946 and 1961. Fifteen football players have been inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame and those former student-athletes have been included in this series.
BASEBALL
- Clark Rex (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) played from 1956-60 and was Pepperdine's Athlete of the Year as a senior, when he batted .310 with 27 RBI. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1980.
- Steve Erickson (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) was the WCC co-Player of the Year in 1987 and a two-time all-conference selection. The outfielder hit .393 with 41 RBI that season and was a career .319 hitter with 18 home runs and 154 RBI.
- David Newhan (Yorba Linda, Calif./Georgia Tech) was all-conference first team in 1995. The infielder batted .367 that season with 11 home runs and 48 RBI. He went on to play eight seasons in MLB.
- Matt Bywater (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) was all-conference three times, including the first team in 2009 and 2010. The left-handed pitcher went 19-9 with a 3.74 ERA over his three seasons.
- Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2013. The right-handed pitcher posted a 1.50 ERA and recorded 14 saves as a reliever that season.
- Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) was all-conference honorable mention in 2015. The outfielder hit .289 with 23 RBI that season.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
- John Furlong (Los Angeles, Calif./Fremont HS) was an All-American in 1951 after leading the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg). The center was named all-conference as both a junior and a senior. He was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008.
- Jelani Gardner (West Covina, Calif./California) made the All-WCC first team in both 1998 and 1999. The guard played two seasons for the Waves after transferring in and averaged 14.0 points, 4.9 assists and 4.0 rebounds over 59 games.
- Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) made the WCC All-Freshman team in 2016 before switching to #20 the following season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
- Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) made the All-WCC first team in 2016. She averaged 18.4 points per game in her only season with the Waves.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
- Debbie Ford (Westminster, Calif./Orange HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 1994. The forward scored 14 goals for Pepperdine's first two teams.
- Jenna Fodor (Winnetka, Calif./Chatsworth HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 2002 and 2005. The forward scored 21 career goals and had 18 assists in 71 games.
- Kelsey Baker (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Punahou School) was All-WCC second team in 2006 and honorable mention in 2007. The defender appeared in 62 career games.
- Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) switched from #1 to #13 as a sophomore and earned All-WCC honors all four seasons, including the second team in 2011. She is Pepperdine's all-time leader in goalie wins (47) and she had a 0.87 career goals-against average. She went on to play in two Olympics with South Africa.
- Bri Visalli (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) was an All-American and the WCC Player of the Year in 2017. She made the All-WCC first team in 2015 and 2017, the second team in 2016 and honorable mention in 2014. The midfielder/forward scored 25 career goals and had 10 assists in 83 games.
- Trinity Watson (Ocean Beach, Calif./Point Loma HS) was All-WCC first team in 2019 as a sophomore defender.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
- Geoff Hart (Sydney, Australia) made the all-conference third team in 1989. The outside hitter had 1,391 career kills and averaged 5.04 per set for his three seasons.
- Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) made the All-American second team in 2015. The middle blocker/opposite had 878 career kills.
- Max Chamberlain (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs HS) was all-conference second team in 2018. The middle blocker hit .372 that season and posted 85 blocks.
WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL
- Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) was an All-American in 2012 and 2013. She won 52 matches in her two seasons, and went 27-0 with Lilla Frederick in 2013.
WOMEN'S INDOOR VOLLEYBALL
- Barbara Stross (Potomoc, Md./Wootton HS) made the All-WCC second team in 1992. The middle blocker had four-year totals of 852 kills, 365 blocks and 323 digs.
- Katy Daly (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) was All-WCC honorable mention in 2003. The outside hitter had career totals of 1,227 kills and 1,080 digs.
- Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) was a three-time All-American, including the first team in 2011. She was the WCC Player of the Year in 2011 and made four All-WCC teams, including the first team three times. The middle blocker/opposite had career totals of 1,300 kills, 503 digs and 375 blocks. Hill was a 2016 U.S. Olympian.
MEN'S WATER POLO
- Aaron Chasen (Newport Beach, Calif.) was a three-time All-American between 1985-87. He scored 215 goals in those three seasons, including 87 in 1985.
- Zachary Holder (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) was All-American honorable mention in 1994. He scored 141 career goals.
- Christian Jensen (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) was All-American honorable mention in 1997. He scored 47 career goals.
