MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men's water polo team rounded out its 2020 recruiting class, as announced by head coach Terry Schroeder on Thursday. The Waves will add Rocco Cuttone, Justin Edward, Jake Howerton and Andrew Outcalt to the roster.
"We are excited to add these four athletes to our Wave Family," said Associate Head Coach Merrill Moses. "We are looking forward to getting to work and preparing for the 2020 season."
Rocco Cuttone | Center Defender | Merced, Calif./El Capitan HS
In three years of varsity water polo, earned team's best offensive player twice … Named All-Central California Conference first team twice, and as a senior was named CCC MVP … Also named the CIF Division 3 MVP as a senior … Played for the Olympic Development Program as a 14U.
Schroeder on Cuttone: "Rocco is a utility player who has an ideal frame to succeed at the D1 level. He will bring depth to our center and center defender position. We are looking forward to watching Rocco develop".
Justin Edward | Goalie | San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Dana Hills HS
Played four years as Varsity starting goalie … Dana Hills went to CIF playoffs all four years … reached CIF D2 semi-finals as Jr … set single season CIF record with 110 goalie steals in 2019 … named All-CIF Southern Section D2 goalie in 2018 and 2019.
Schroeder on Edward: "Justin is an explosive, confident and vocal goalie that reminds me of the great Merrill Moses coming out of high school. He will be competing for a starting role against our current group of talented goalies."
Jake Howerton | Attacker | Cardiff, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS
Led team in scoring as a senior … Helped team to CIF Championship his junior year, scoring three goals in championship game … Named MVP of the America's Finest City Tournament … Named All-CIF San Diego first team … Named All-America second team as a senior.
Schroeder on Howerton: "Jake is a very talented attacker who has a lot of size and length and has played at the highest level. We are excited to add Jake to our team as he will help us both offensively and defensively."
Andrew Outcalt | Attacker | Pacific Palisades, Calif./Oaks Christian HS
Played four years of varsity water polo at Oaks Christian, helping the team to a CIF Division III championship and a runner-up finish at the CIF Division I championship … Played in two Junior Olympics … Brother to current Wave Matt Outcalt, and son of former Wave Greg Outcalt.
Schroeder on Outcalt: "Andrew is a local recruit. He is a talented right-side player who has great vision of the game and has competed for a State Championship in High School. He is a strong finisher, however his biggest asset maybe is ability to set up his team mates. Andrew will add depth to our team on the 4/5 side of the pool."
Cuttone, Edward, Howerton and Outcalt join previously announced and incoming newcomers Nicholas Fichman, Christian Hosea, Travis Reynolds and Nico Tearney on the 2020 squad, and look to build upon 2019's NCAA semifinal finish.
