MALIBU, Calif. – Mike Malinchak of the #16/21 Pepperdine baseball team was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The award is the second won by a Waves player this year, and the first of Malinchak's career.
The junior outfielder from Delray Beach, Fla. had an outstanding weekend at the plate against then-ranked #16 Michigan. He went 9-for-12 on the weekend, including a 4-for-4 performance in game two of Saturday's doubleheader. In that same game, he hit a solo home run to deep right center field and drove in three total runs. In the other two games of the weekend, he went 3-for-4 and 2-for-4 and drove in another four runs.
Malinchak helped the Waves move up in the rankings, to a peak of 16 from two different publications, after defeating last year's national runner-up two games out of three.
Cooper Chandler was the first Wave to be named Player of the Week this year, earning the nomination on Feb. 24 for a 1-hit, eight inning performance.
The Waves are back at home this week, taking on Cal Poly on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and beginning conference play on Friday when they host San Francisco.
