Women's Hoops Beats SMC in WCC Second Round

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Hannah Friend scored 26 points and the Pepperdine women's basketball team overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat Saint Mary's, 87-72, in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championships on Friday afternoon.
 
The sixth-seeded Waves (15-14) saw four of their starters combine for 78 of the points in beating the Gaels (12-19). SMC led 48-37 early in the third quarter but Pepperdine outscored the Gaels by 26 the rest of the way.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Senior guard Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State) made 10 of 16 shots to score her 26 points, which was one shy of her season high. She scored 20 in the second half, and 11 in the fourth quarter. She also had five rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocks.
  • Junior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia) posted her fourth double-double of the season with a 21-point, 12-rebound performance. She also made 10 of 16 shots.
  • Sophomore guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) just missed being the Waves' third 20-point scorer as she finished 19 points, along with four assists.
  • Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) contributed 12 points, nine assists and four steals.
KEY STATS 
  • Saint Mary's shot 60.7% from the field in the first half but the Waves' defense limited them to 39.3% in the second half (33.3% in the fourth quarter), for a total of 50.0% for the game.
  • The Waves finished at 53.1% after hitting more than half of their shots in the second, third and fourth quarters.
  • Pepperdine overcame an 11-for-19 three-point shooting performance by SMC.
  • The Waves forced 17 turnovers while committing only six and had a 27-9 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Pepperdine had a 26-0 edge in fast-break points.
  • Saint Mary's was led by Sam Simons' 24 points.
PLAY BY PLAY
 
The Waves spent much of the first half falling behind and then coming back. Saint Mary's jumped out to a 16-7 lead, but Pepperdine brought it back to two at 20-18 before SMC took a 22-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Pepperdine took its first lead of the game at 28-26 on a Sitanggan lay-up, but SMC responded with a 10-0 run to go in front 36-28. The lead went back up to nine at 39-30, but the Waves closed the gap again to 41-37 at the break.
 
The Gaels scored the first seven points of the second half to take their biggest lead of 11 at 48-37 just a minute in. Friend scored seven points in a 14-3 run that tied the game at 51. Pepperdine took only its second lead of the game at 57-56 on a Sitanggan basket, and the Waves led 59-56 after three quarters.
 
With a 61-60 lead, Friend kickstarted an 11-0 run with a three-pointer. That gave Pepperdine its first double-digit lead at 72-60 with five minutes to go. Saint Mary's got the deficit down to eight at 72-64, but Friend scored four more points in a 7-0 run to push the lead to 15 at 79-64 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Pepperdine moves on to face third-seeded BYU in the quarterfinals on Saturday (March 7) at 3 p.m. The game will be shown on the WCC Network and by BYUtv, and there will be an audio-only WaveCasts with Al Epstein.
