LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Pepperdine men's golf team had a rough start at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, opening one of the nation's premier events in a tie for 12th place after Sunday's first round.
The Waves shot a 304 at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club. All six Waves at the tournament finished between +3 and +5 on the day. Pepperdine was in decent shape until the final five holes, when the four scoring players went a combined 13-over.
Pepperdine, ranked #1 by Golfstat, is one of the seven top-10 teams at the event.
PLAYER SCORES
- Freshman William Mouw (Chino, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) had the Waves' best round of the day, a 3-over 75 that put him into a tie for 28th place. His round included four birdies, including three straight on holes 11, 12 and 13.
- Senior Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) is tied for 37th after a 76. He had three birdies.
- Sophomore Joe Highsmith (Lakewood, Wash./Bellarmine Preparatory School) is tied for 37th after a 76. He had two birdies.
- Junior Joey Vrzich (El Cajon, Calif./Christian HS/Nevada) is tied for 40th after a 77. He had three birdies.
- Freshman Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Sage Creek HS) is tied for 40th after a 77. He had one birdie.
- Playing as an individual, sophomore Derek Hitchner (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) is tied for 40th after a 77. He had one birdie.

Pepperdine is paired with UCF and Georgia Tech for Monday's second round. They'll start on the 10th tee at 9:35 a.m.
