SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team picked up its first road West Coast Conference game on Thursday, defeating San Francisco 70-64.
Hannah Friend led the Waves with 18 points, and
Malia Bambrick had 17.
The Waves (12-10, 6-6) overcame an eight-point lead to defeat the Dons (8-15, 1-10 WCC).
BIG WAVES
- Graduate transfer guard Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State) led the Waves with 18 points and brought down eight rebounds. She shot 8-for-18 from the field and 2-for-3 from three.
- Sophomore guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 17 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 2-for4 from three.
- Redshirt-freshman guard Jayla Ruffus-Milner (North Hills, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) also was in double digits, scoring 11 points and bringing down a team-high nine rebounds.
- Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had 10 points on the night, adding three steals and four rebounds.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Dons got off to a hot start, going on a 10-3 run to start the game. The Waves fought back, getting three straight layups from Friend at the end of the quarter to go into the second trailing 12-10.
In the second, the Waves took their first lead of the game on a Ruffus-Milner layup after a Friend three, leading the Dons 20-18 with five minutes to play in the half. With 14 seconds left, San Francisco got a three-pointer to take a 1-point lead, but a Bambrick jumper at the buzzer gave the Waves a 27-26 lead going into the half.
After the half, the two teams traded buckets, but San Francisco went on a seven-point run to take a 34-37 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. Back-to-back Bambrick jumpers gave the Waves the lead again, but the Dons came back to take a 46-43 lead leading into the final 10 minutes of play.
In the fourth, the Dons retook the lead with 8:45 left in the game, but the Waves came back to take a 2-point lead with 5:48 left. The Dons tied the game with just under three minutes to play and took a lead with just over two minutes to play. The Waves retook the lead with 1:47 left on a Friend layup, and would not give the lead back, going on an 8-0 run to end the game.

- The Dons outshot the Waves 51% to 41%.
- Pepperdine was better from three, shooting 45.5% compared to the 41.7% by the Dons.
- The Waves edged out the Dons at the glass, bringing down 32 rebounds while San Francisco had 31.
