SAN FRANCISCO, California – The Pepperdine men's basketball team suffered a narrow defeat in overtime, 63-61, at San Francisco in West Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves (15-14, 8-7) and Dons (18-11, 7-7) are likely vying for the fifth and sixth seeds at the upcoming WCC Tournament. That'll be decided in the upcoming final week of the regular season.
Pepperdine had a chance to win at both the end of regulation and overtime but couldn't get those shots to fall.
BIG WAVES
- Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half. He sank four three-pointers and also had seven assists.
- Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 12 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.
- Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
- Freshman guard Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS) had 11 points and five rebounds.
KEY STATS
- The Waves' defense held USF to 32.4% shooting, a season low for a Pepperdine opponent.
- But, Pepperdine had another rough game shooting too at 36.4%.
- The Waves went to the free throw line a season-low six times (making four). USF went 9-for-12.
- San Francisco was led by Charles Minlend's 19 points and 12 rebounds.
PLAY BY PLAY
Both teams started slowly, but the Waves heated up first and Altman had eight points to help Pepperdine to an 18-10 lead (its biggest of the game) just past the midway point of the first half. But USF's Trevante Anderson sank three three-pointers in a minute-and-a-half to give the Dons a 19-18 lead. It went back and forth from there and USF went into the break with a 28-27 lead.
USF scored the first eight points of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game, nine, at 36-27. But the Waves came right back with a 13-3 run, six of them by Ross, as the Waves went back in front 40-39 with 13 1/2 minutes to go. The Dons took a pair of four-point leads at 46-42 with eight minutes left and 54-50 with under four minutes to go, but both times the Waves came back to tie or take the lead.
Kameron Edwards and Ross both sank three-pointers to put Pepperdine ahead 56-54 with 2:48 left. A
Kessler Edwards lay-up put Pepperdine in front 58-56 with 16 seconds to go, but USF tied it with two free throws by Minlend with under 10 seconds to play. Pepperdine had the last shot of regulation, but missed.
Tired legs seemed to affect both teams in OT, as the Waves went 1-for-8 from the field (the make coming at the buzzer) and the Dons went 1-for-5.
Kessler Edwards scored all three of Pepperdine's points in overtime, including a free throw that tied it at 59 with 3:08 to go. But USF went ahead with a basket with 2:52 left, and then neither team scored again until the Waves were forced to foul with six seconds left after a potential game-winning three-point shot was off the mark. The Dons made both free throws to ice the game, though Edwards made a basket at the buzzer to make the end result a two-point game.
NOTABLES
- Ross raised his career total to 1,694 points, passing Dana Jones for third place on the Waves' all-time scoring list.
- This was the second time this season that both Edwards brothers recorded a double-double.
- The Waves have now lost in 10 of their last 11 trips to San Francisco.
- Pepperdine is now 2-1 in overtime games this season.
- This was the 21st consecutive game that Pepperdine was without at least three injured players. It's also the 26th time in 29 games they've been without multiple players.
