MALIBU, Calif. – Cooper Chandler of the Pepperdine baseball team took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and struck out 10 in Saturday's 4-0 victory over Akron.

The Waves (6-0) combined for a two-hit shutout of the Zips (0-5) in game two of the series.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior RHP Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) had a great day on the mound. He took a no-hitter into the eighth and struck out 10 batters.
  • Junior outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Dana Hills HS) went 2-for-4 on the day, including an RBI double in the eighth.
  • Sophomore infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 2-for-4, driving in the first run of the game on an RBI single in the fifth inning.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
After walking the first batter of the game, Chandler fell into a rhythm, retiring the next 22 batters he faced, including striking out 10 over the course of eight innings. At one point, he struck out four batters in a row.

The Waves started a bit slow offensively, getting only one hit through four innings. At the beginning of the fifth, lightning struck near the Malibu area, forcing a 30 minute delay. After the game resumed in the fifth, the Waves loaded the bases on a fielder's choice and two singles. Young singled through the right side, scoring Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) from third. Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) then reached on a throwing error, scoring both Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS) and David LeBioda (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) to give the Waves a 3-0 lead after five innings of play.

In the eighth, Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) got hit by a pitch, and was driven in by Alexiades, giving the Waves a 4-0 lead.

Shane Telfer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) came into the game in the ninth, and got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.
