Waves Explode for Nine Runs in Win Over Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team continued its winning ways on Tuesday night, defeating Cal Poly 9-2. Justin Lutes had four RBI, including two coming from a two-run home run in the seventh.

The Waves (4-0) never trailed in the ballgame, taking the lead in the third and never surrendering it to the Mustangs (2-2).

BIG WAVES
  • Senior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) had a monster game, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Two of the RBI came from a monstrous two-run bomb in the seventh.
  • Senior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 3-for-5 with three singles and one RBI.
  • Redshirt-Sophomore RHP Gunnar Groen (Austin, Texas/Westlake HS) had a stellar first collegiate start, throwing five innings of two-hit baseball, giving up only one run and striking out five and picking up his first win of the season.

GAME RECAP
The Waves and Mustangs were quiet in the first two innings. In the third, The Waves got runners on first and second thanks to back-to-back singles from David LeBioda (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel HS) and Ryan Johnson (Tempe, Ariz./Seton Catholic HS). After Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) drove a single up the middle, scoring LeBioda from third. Then, Modlin kept up his hot start to the year, singling up the middle to score Johnson to give the Waves a 2-0 lead after three innings.

In the fourth inning, Quintt Landis (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) reached on a two-out error from the shortstop, and Johnson LeBioda got his second hit with a single up the middle. Johnson then tripled to deep center field, bringing two runs in and giving the Waves a 4-0 lead.

After Modlin got a one-out single in the top of the fifth, Lutes crushed a ball to deep left-center field, scoring Modlin all the way from first. In the home half, two singles and two wild pitches gave Cal Poly their first run of the ballgame. Groen got out of the inning with a strikeout and a lineout, mitigating the damage to just a single run. The Waves led 5-1 after five full.

Groen's night was over after five innings of work, and Dane Morrow (Malibu, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) came in for relief. In the home half of the sixth, the Mustangs got a run on an RBI single to cut the lead down to 5-2 going into the seventh.

In the seventh, Cook got aboard thanks to a hit by pitch, and Justin Lutes clobbered a ball to deep right field, over the fence for a two-run home run, giving the Waves a 7-2 lead through seven.

In the ninth, back-to-back singles from Johnson and Young, along with a productive flyout from Modlin which moved Young to third, gave the Waves runners on first and third with one out. Lutes then got his fourth RBI of the night after a sacrifice fly to right. Alexiades then promptly smacked a ball up the middle to score Cook from third and give the Waves a 9-2 lead with three outs to get to win the game.
