LOS ANGELES – The Pepperdine women's basketball team got its fifth win in a row as they defeated West Coast Conference and PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount 77-66 in Gersten Pavilion on Saturday night. Malia Bambrick led all scorers with 21 points.
The Waves (14-10, 8-6 WCC) led the Lions (7-20, 3-11 WCC) by as many as 15 points during the contest.
BIG WAVES
· Sophomore guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) led all scorers with 21 points. She shot 7-14 from the field and 5-9 from beyond the arc.
· Redshirt senior guard Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State) had 16 points and four rebounds for the Waves.
· Redshirt senior guard Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) put up 11 points and five rebounds.
· Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) scored six points and put up 10 assists.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves started off hot, scoring the first four points of the contest. After some back and forth scoring, the Waves got a three-pointer from Bambrick to take a 16-9 lead. The Lions scored the final four points of the quarter, and the Waves led 16-13 after 10 minutes.
In the second, the Lions took a small lead before the Waves went on a 15-point run midway through the quarter to take a 39-26 lead with 1:13 left in the half. Bambrick had 11 points in the quarter as the Waves led 40-29 going into the halftime break.
After the Lions got the game to within six points, the Waves stormed back to take an 11-point lead at 55-44 and never led by less than nine points the rest of the game. They matched their 15-point lead in the middle of the fourth quarter and secured the team's fifth win in a row.
KEY STATS
· The Waves outshot the Lions 48% to 40% for the game.
· Pepperdine shot incredibly well from beyond the arc, making 44.4% of its three-pointers. Loyola Marymount made just 31% of shots from three-point range.
· The Lions controlled the boards, bringing down 44 rebounds compared to the 33 from Pepperdine.
