LOS ANGELES, California – Kameron Edwards tied his career high with 27 points and the Pepperdine men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit on the road to take down PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount in overtime, 68-67, on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves (12-11, 5-4) swept the regular-season series from the Lions (8-15, 2-7) despite trailing 28-12 in the first half. Pepperdine had a chance to win at the end of regulation, and then survived a missed three-point attempt at the overtime buzzer by LMU.
BIG WAVES
- Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS), the reigning WCC Player of the Week, had another big outing for the Waves. He hit the 20-point mark for the 10th time this season and tied his career high of 27 set against UC Santa Barbara in November 2017. Edwards made 11 of 17 shots and also had five rebounds in a career-high 43 minutes.
- Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) matched his highest output in a WCC game this season with 17 points. He made three three-pointers and also had five rebounds and two blocks in a career-high 41 minutes.
- Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) had his quietest game of the season with seven points but he also contributed seven assists, five rebounds and two steals in a career-high-tying 43 minutes.
KEY STATS
- The Waves were outshot 52.1% to 43.4%.
- Pepperdine had small advantages in three-pointers made (five to three) and free throws made (17 to 14).
- The Waves' biggest edge came in the fact that they forced a season-high 21 turnovers, while only committing 10, and enjoyed a benefit of 27-9 in points off turnovers.
- LMU was led by Eli Scott's 21 points.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Lions came out hot, making 12 of their first 15 shots. The Waves hit just five of their first 17 shots, and the result was a 28-12 Loyola Marymount lead with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the first half. But Pepperdine finally got things going, as
Kessler Edwards had seven points in a 14-3 run to draw within five points at 31-26. LMU went into the break with a 33-26 lead.
The Waves finally tied the game at 37 on a
Kessler Edwards basket, then took their first lead since 4-2 at 42-40 with 11:18 to play after a pair of
Kameron Edwards free throws.
With LMU up 46-44, freshman guard
Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS) started an 8-0 run with a three-point play.

Kameron Edwards dunked to put Pepperdine ahead 52-46 with six minutes to go.
A Ross lay-up gave Pepperdine its largest lead of the game at eight at 61-53 with 3:42 to play. But that would be the Waves' final points in regulation. LMU scored the next eight points, eventually tying the game with 21 seconds left on a pair of free throws. A game-winning attempt by the Waves missed and the teams were tied at 61 after 40 minutes.
Kameron Edwards scored the first five points of overtime, followed by a Ross basket that put Pepperdine ahead 67-61 with two minutes left. Once again the Lions made a comeback, as the Waves scored only one point the rest of the way. LMU got to within one point with 44 seconds left, then forced a Pepperdine miss.
The Waves defended the Lions' final possession well, deflecting a pass out of bounds with three seconds left. A last-gasp three-pointer was off the mark.
NOTABLES
- Ross passed both Levy Middlebrooks and Dexter Howard and moved into eighth place on the Waves' all-time scoring list. He now has 1,549 points.
- Pepperdine won in Gersten Pavilion and swept the regular-season series from LMU for the first time since 2015.
- The Waves are now 104-69 all-time against the rival Lions, the most wins by Pepperdine against any other school.
- This was the 15th consecutive game that Pepperdine was without at least three injured players. It's also the 20th time in 23 games they've been without multiple players.
