Waves Fall in Close Game at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball game lost a tough game against Pacific today 64-63. Paige Fecske had 15 points for the Waves.=

An inbound pass that went awry prevented the Waves (7-7, 1-3 WCC) from getting a shot with 10 seconds left, allowing Pacific (10-5, 3-1 WCC) to hold onto the victory.

BIG WAVES

·       Redshirt-senior guard Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) led the Waves with 15 points, including shooting 3-7 from three. She also had three assists and four rebounds.

·       Sophomore guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) had 14 points, making two of her five three pointers.

·       Junior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) scored 10 points and brought down a team-high seven rebounds.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Waves got off to a great start in the first, going on a 6-0 run to take a 14-7 lead halfway through the quarter. Pepperdine never trailed in the first, leading 19-15 after 10 minutes.

Pacific took their first lead in the second, after a jumper made it 24-23. After a 7-2 run for the Tigers made it 31-25, the Waves scored eight straight points to go into halftime leading 35-33.

The Tigers started the third on a 5-0 run, retaking a 38-35 lead. Pepperdine regained the lead and went on a 6-0 run to lead 49-43. Pacific scored six unanswered points of their own to end the third leading 51-51.

With 1:48 left to play, Pacific hit a three-pointer to go up 62-57. Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) answered with a three of her own to keep the Waves within two points two free throws from the Tigers made it 64-60. Fecske then hit a clutch three to put the Waves down only one point. The Waves fought for and won a jump-ball to regain possession in the final 10 seconds of the game, but a turnover as time expired prevented the Waves from completing the comeback.

KEY STATS

·       Pepperdine shot 38.5% from the field, but Pacific shot an even 40%.

·       The Waves shot the three ball a bit better, making seven shots compared to the Tigers' four.

·       Pacific won the rebounding battler, bringing down 33 boards compared to the 31 of Pepperdine.

The Waves are back home in Firestone Fieldhouse on Thursday, Jan. 9 when they take on Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
