MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball got 15 points from Barbara Sitanggan in Thursday night's 59-54 West Coast Conference win over Pacific.
With the win, the Waves improve to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The Tigers fall to 12-9 overall on the year and 5-5 in conference.
BIG WAVES
· Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) led all scorers with 15 points. She also had four assists, giving her 444 on her career and moving into second place. She is eight assists away from becoming the all-time assists leader at Pepperdine.
· Senior forward Ashleen Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif./Foothill College) had a career-high 10 points, shooting 4-5 from the field and 2-4 from the free throw line.
· Senior guard Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State) had nine points, shooting 3-7 from the field and 3-8 from the foul stripe.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the first six points. Pepperdine then continued to roll in the first, taking a22-14 lead into the second quarter. Quirke scored six of her ten points in the first quarter.
In the second, the Tigers came back to tie the game at 28 with 2:27 left on the clock. Pepperdine took a two-point lead with 30 seconds left, but the Tigers tied it again with a last second shot to send the game to halftime tied at 30.
Pepperdine scored the first four points of the second half, and led by as many as five in the quarter, going up 39-34 at the 5:58 mark. Pacific tied it again late in the quarter on a jumper with six seconds left to push the game to the fourth quarter tied at 43.
The Tigers took their first lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, going up 47-43. The Waves tied it up on a Quirke layup. Both teams made baskets back and forth until the Waves went up 54-49 with two minutes left on the clock. Pacific got to within two points of the Waves, but layups and free throws gave the Waves the win.
KEY STATS
· No three pointers were made by either team during the game, the first game this year in which the Waves have not made a three-pointer.
· The Waves outshot the Tigers 40.8% to 36.4%.
· Both teams shot free-throws at an okay click. The Tigers shot 60.9% from the line and the Waves shot 59.4%.
· Pacific controlled the boards, bringing down 40 rebounds compared to the 35 by the Waves.
