SANTA CLARA, California – Behind 24 points from
Colbey Ross and 21 from
Kameron Edwards, the Pepperdine men's basketball team ended Santa Clara's 17-game home winning streak and handed the Broncos a 90-86 overtime loss in West Coast Conference play on Thursday night.
The Waves (10-10, 3-3) got off to a hot start to take a 14-point lead in the first half, but the Broncos (16-5, 3-3) surged back to take a five-point lead in the final minutes of regulation. Pepperdine battled back to take it OT, where Ross scored seven of Pepperdine's 11 points.
BIG WAVES
- Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) had nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals in addition to his 24 points. It was his fifth straight game with 20 or more points. He went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. He played a career-high 43 minutes.
- Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 21 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season. He played a career-high 40 minutes.
- Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) got his team-high sixth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
- Junior guard Skylar Chavez (Woodacre, Calif./Drake HS/Santa Rosa JC) scored 14 points and made three three-pointers in a career-high 43 minutes.
KEY STATS
- The Waves were outshot 45.2% to 43.5%, but had a much better night on three-pointers (11-for-24 to 9-for-31) and free throws (19-for-27 to 11-for-16).
- Pepperdine forced 15 turnovers and committed only 11 and enjoyed a 19-9 edge in points off turnovers.
- Santa Clara got a career-high 33 points from Josip Vrankic.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Waves were terrific offensively for the first 10 minutes as they jumped out to a 27-16 lead. During an 11-0 run,
Kameron Edwards hit two three-pointers and scored eight points. Both teams would hit a scoreless lull of about three minutes, but the Waves were still able to take their biggest first-half lead of 14 points at 35-21 after a
Kessler Edwards three-pointer. It was still a 14-point lead at 37-23 with five minutes to go, but Santa Clara then went on an 11-0 run. A three-point play by sophomore center
Victor Ohia Obioha (Owerri, Nigeria/Hillcrest HS) in the final minute put Pepperdine ahead 40-34 at the break.
The Waves maintained a small lead for the first 13 minutes of the second half, but Santa Clara eventually went ahead and took its first lead of the half at 68-66 with 6:44 left. Santa Clara went up by as many as five points with 3 1/2 minutes left, but Chavez hit a three and
Kessler Edwards tied it with a tip-in with 2:32 left.
Down two in the final minute of regulation,
Kameron Edwards scored off his own miss to tie the game at 79 with 50 seconds left. Santa Clara missed on its next opportunity, and the Waves had a chance to win, but Ross' three-point attempt just before the buzzer was off the mark.
The Waves scored the first four points of overtime on a long
Kessler Edwards jumper and two free throws by freshman guard
Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS). Up 85-83, Ross hit a clutch three-pointer just before the shot clock expired to put the Waves up by five with 20 seconds to go, though Santa Clara came back with a three-pointer with 11 seconds left.
Ross made two free throws to put the Waves back up four at 90-86 with 9.2 seconds left, and the Broncos missed on their final attempt.
NOTABLES
- This was Pepperdine's first overtime game of the season.
- The Waves won in the Leavey Center for the first time since 2014.
- Santa Clara was 15-0 at home this season before tonight.
- Pepperdine used only seven players once again. It's the seventh time this season they've missed at least four players due to injury or illness, including each of the last five games. It's also the 17th time in 20 games they've been without multiple players.
- Colbey Ross passed Lamond Murray Jr., Ollie Matson and Boot Bond tonight on the Waves' all-time scoring list to move all the way up to 11th place.
