Men's Hoops Goes Cold in Loss to Pacific

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's basketball team suffered through one of its coldest shooting games in years and the Waves fell to Pacific 59-56 on Thursday night in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

The Waves (7-8, 0-1) made 15 of 56 shots for a 26.8% success rate. Still, they had two chances to tie the Tigers (13-4, 1-0) at the end of the game, though both missed.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) had 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists before fouling out late.
  • Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 12 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
  • Freshman forward Jan Zidek (Prague, Czech Republic) scored eight points off the bench.

  • Pacific was led by Gary Chivichyan's 19 points.
PLAY BY PLAY

Pacific jumped out to a 10-2 lead after four minutes. But Kameron Edwards, freshman guard Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif./Colony HS) and junior guard Skylar Chavez (Woodacre, Calif./Drake HS/Santa Rosa JC) hit three-pointers to start a 10-0 run. Pacific's last first-half lead came at 17-15 with 10:23 left. The Waves then went on a 17-2 run to go up 32-19 with under three minutes to play. Pacific ended the half on a 10-0 run to make it 34-31 at halftime.

A 7-0 spurt thanks to an Altman lay-up, a Zidek three-pointer and a Kameron Edwards basket gave Pepperdine its largest lead of 10 points at 47-37 with 10:51 to play. Pacific came back with the next nine points, however, and eventually regained the lead at 51-49 with 6:13 to play.

Ross scored on a lay-up to tie the game at 51 with 6:04 to go, but that would be Pepperdine's final made field goal. The Waves trailed by one at 55-54 when Pacific's Chivichyan hit a three-pointer with 1:07 left. Ross made two free throws with 51 seconds left to cut the deficit to two at 58-56 with 51 seconds remaining.

Pepperdine forced a turnover to get the ball back, but missed on its first attempt to tie with eight seconds remaining. Pacific made one of two free throws with four seconds left, giving Pepperdine a last chance to tie, but a three-point attempt was off the mark.
