MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men's basketball team continued its dominant run in Firestone Fieldhouse over PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Thursday night, beating the Lions 75-67 in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves (9-9, 2-2) have beaten the Lions (7-11, 1-3) in Malibu 21 of the last 22 times. Pepperdine led this one for nearly 36 minutes, and never trailed in the second half before pulling away late.
BIG WAVES
- Junior guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) led all players with 20 points and eight assists. He went 9-for-10 from the free throw line, most of it in the final minutes.
- Junior guard Skylar Chavez (Woodacre, Calif./Drake HS/Santa Rosa JC) went 4-for-6 on three-pointers and scored 15 points. He also had a season-high seven rebounds.
- Senior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
- Sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS) had 12 points and eight rebounds. He went 3-for-5 on three-pointers.
KEY STATS
- The Waves outshot the Lions 46.8% to 41.0%.
- Pepperdine had the advantage from distance, making 11 of 23 three-pointers (47.8%) compared to LMU's 6-for-22 (27.3%).
- The nation's best free throw shooting team was almost exactly at its average, making 20 of 24 (83.3%). LMU was 11-for-15 (73.3%).
- Pepperdine survived 17 turnovers, while LMU committed 12.
- LMU got 19 points from Erik Johansson and a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double from Jordan Bell.
PLAY BY PLAY
The Waves jumped out to an 11-2 lead after four minutes. They made their first five three-point attempts and went up 19-7 a little more than eight minutes in. The Waves' shooting would cool off, however, and LMU would eventually tie the game at 22. The Lions would then take their first lead at 28-27. Down 30-29,
Kameron Edwards had four of the next six Pepperdine points, and the Waves would go into the break with a 36-32 lead.
LMU tied the game twice early in the second half, but when sophomore guard
Darryl Polk Jr. (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) sank a three-pointer to make it 41-38, the Waves would never trail again. LMU would keep it close however, as the Waves' lead wouldn't grow beyond six points until less than five minutes left.
With Pepperdine up 59-55 with a little more than five minutes to play, the Waves went on a 9-0 run over about 2 1/2 minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 13 points at 68-55. Ross made two free throws,
Kessler Edwards sank a three-pointer,
Kameron Edwards made two free throws and Ross converted a lay-up.
LMU wouldn't get any closer than six the rest of the way, and Ross went 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute-plus to put the game away.
NOTABLES
- The Waves were once again limited to eight available scholarship players. It's the fifth time this season they've missed at least four players due to injury or illness, and the 15th time in 18 games they've been without multiple players.
- Pepperdine now leads LMU 103-69 in the all-time series.
