SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The #6 Pepperdine men's water polo team came away with one win and one loss on Thursday afternoon after traveling to Santa Barbara for two games.
The Waves (9-2) defeated Ottawa of Arizona (1-9) 27-6 before falling 16-15 in overtime to No. 2 UC Santa Barbara (10-0).
Balazs Kosa, Sean Ferrari and
Mate Toth each had hat tricks in the game against UCSB.
PEPPERDINE 27, OTTAWA 6
The Waves scored seven unanswered goals to open the first game of the day.
Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and
Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) traded off scoring the first three before
Zach Arthur (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) made the game 4-0.
Coleman Carpenter (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) scored the first of his six goals in the first, and
Austin Smit (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) scored twice in a row to end the quarter with a 7-0 Pepperdine lead.
In the second,
Marko Asic (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) led off the quarter with two straight goals.
Jake Gordon (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale HS) then scored before Asic finished his hat trick, scoring his 200th career goal.
Xavier Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored twice to give the Waves a 13-1 halftime lead.
Dilworth scored three times in a row to open the third quarter before Carpenter scored four in a row to push the score to 20-1 in favor of the Waves.
Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) scored before Ottawa answered. Carpenter got his sixth and final goal, followed by goals from Smit and
Michael Dakis (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) to end the quarter with the Waves leading 24-3. In the fourth, the Waves got goals from
Matt Outcalt (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Oaks Christian HS),
Max Sprute (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and Gordon to secure the 27-6 victory.

In the day's second game, UCSB started the game with two straight goals. Asic and
Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Általános Iskola És Gimnázium) each scored to tie the game back at two. After two more UCSB goals,
Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erszebet Boarding School) and Ferrari both scored before the quarter ended. After one quarter, the Waves and Gauchos were tied at 4. The second quarter started with a UCSB goal, but
Kaden Kaneko (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) tied the game with the Waves' lone goal in the quarter. UCSB scored to take a 6-5 lead into half time.
To start the second half, Asic and Toth scored back to back goals to give the Waves the lead. After UCSB scored a goal on a power play, Kosa scored his second goal of the game to retake the lead. Jarvis then scored after the Gauchos tied to give the Waves a 9-8 lead. UCSB scored twice at the end of the quarter to take a 10-9 lead into the fourth.
After two goals from the Gauchos, Toth, Ferrari and Thomas combined to tie the game up at 12. Then, with 30 seconds left, Ferrari scored his third goal of the game to re-tie the match at 13 after a UCSB goal, pushing the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Kosa scored the lone goal, giving the Waves a 14-13 lead heading into the final five minutes. In the second overtime, UCSB tied the game before a backhand goal from Dilworth retook the lead for the Waves. The Gauchos tied the game with 30 seconds left in the game. With just seven seconds left, a
Sean Thomas steal was overturned as a ball-under call, allowing the Gauchos to score the winning goal.
