PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first set was back-and-forth throughout, but inevitably a strong .333 hitting output and a pair of aces by
Rachel Ahrens would help the cause. After an even 7-7 tie, the Waves would pull ahead with big kills by
Tarah Wylie and
Shannon Scully. The opposition was able to counter and tie things up at the 18's mark, but a pair of consecutive smashes from Scully gave the Waves the lead once again. UCI stayed close behind, but Scully was unphased, putting down her 10
th kill of the match to set the tone. Pepperdine then capitalized on an Anteater error to take the set 25-23.
Â
The second set was close throughout with the Anteaters collecting the first lead and pulling ahead 9-5. Â Pepperdine capitalized on a few errors from across the net and a block from
Alli O'Harra and Ahrens helped the Waves counter and tie the set at 9's. UCI worked ahead to a 17-10 lead late in the set, but a quick sub change by the Waves had the home team answering quickly. Big kills from Scully and a pair of back-to-back aces by
Tayah Mahi put the Waves within three at the 22-19 mark. Another ace from Scully and a pair of smashes from O'Harra tied the set at 23-23 and Pepperdine was able to close things up with a kill from Ahrens and a solo block from Wylie.
Â
Pepperdine was nearly untouchable in the third and final set, as an impressive service output from Scully including an ace and three-straight smashes from
Hannah Frohling set the tone with a 10-3 lead. The Waves continued to roll with a Mahi and
Rosie Ballo block combination, followed by three nearly-consecutive smashes from Ballo, and held an impressive 22-10 lead late in the action. Final kills by Ahrens and multiple errors from the Anteaters helped finish out the match with a 25-17 final set score and a three-set Waves' win.
