Women's Soccer Shuts Out SDSU 2-0

MALIBU, California – With goals by Shelby Little and Hailey Stenberg and another terrific defensive performance, the Pepperdine women's soccer team capped off a perfect weekend with a 2-0 home win over San Diego State on Sunday.

Following Friday's 1-0 win over #2 Stanford, the Waves (3-3-1) showed no letdown in beating the Aztecs (1-5-1). Pepperdine enjoyed an advantage of 14-4 in shots and limited SDSU to one quality chance.

Little (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Hillcrest Christian HS) scored in the first 10 minutes and Stenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) added an insurance goal midway through the second half.

GOALS

Pepperdine '10: Redshirt freshman forward Olivia Packer (Las Vegas, Calif./Palo Verde HS) chased the ball down on the far left side and sent in a cross. Junior forward Brie Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS) met the ball at the far post and deftly touched it back into the middle, where Little ran onto it and knocked the ball into the back of the net. It was the freshman's second goal of the season. It was the first career assist for Packer, while Welch collected her team-high second assist of the season.

Pepperdine '69: Sophomore midfielder Nicolette Lewis (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) popped a ball into the box and it was headed out by a San Diego State defender, but right to Stenberg. She made a nice turn back to her left and unleashed a beautifully placed shot from 22 yards out, which glanced off the right post and into the net. It was the senior forward's first goal of the season and the seventh of her career.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "The Aztec program has a great tradition and history. Like us, they're a really young team. We started strong and got a great goal. We needed that. We talked about being more committed in the final third and we got a really nice opening goal, and then we settled into the game. Our second-half performance really merited a goal and Hailey's goal was world class. I'm pleased with the result and we'll keep trying to build on it."

NOTABLE
  • With two straight shutouts, the Waves haven't surrendered a goal in 221 minutes.
  • The Waves are now 6-3-0 all-time against San Diego State (4-1-0 in home matches).
