FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The Pepperdine men's golf team had another strong showing at the NCAA Championships on Sunday, as the Waves improved to 12th place to make the third-round cut.
Â
Pepperdine has gone from 26th to 17th to 12th over the three days of competition. Only the top 15 teams have advanced to Monday's fourth and final round of stroke play, and the Waves managed to beat the cut by five shots after starting the day two shots back. Pepperdine has a three-day total of 896 (312-291-293) at the par-72 Blessings Golf Club.
Â
Today's score of 5-over was the ninth-best of the day among the 30 teams. Throw out the first round and Pepperdine's combined second and third-round score of 584 ranks sixth-best in the competition.
Â
Pepperdine's next task will be to get into the top eight after Monday in order to make the next cut and advance to match play. The top seven teams may be out of reach, but eighth-place Clemson is only four shots ahead of the Waves.
Â
Sunday's round was highlighted by even-par 72s from freshman Joe Highsmith and sophomore Austin Murphy. Murphy entered the lineup as a substitute ahead of Sunday's third round.
