PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine baseball team fell in game one against BYU 13-7 on Friday. Three Waves hit home runs, including two in the first inning.

The Waves (16-13, 7-6 WCC) jumped out to an early lead, but were outhit 20-10 by the Cougars (23-8, 9-4 WCC) .

BIG WAVES

Sophomore infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-4 on the night, including a first-inning 3-run home run.
Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai JC) had the second home run of the night for the Waves, his only hit of the night.
Junior infielder Justin Lutes (Las Vegas, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 1-for-4, hitting his first home run as a Wave.

GAME RECAP
The Waves came out of the gate hot, with Wyatt Young leading the game off with a single up the middle. After McAfee singled and reached second on an error, Belk drove a ball deep into the right center field gap, clearing the wall for his second home run of the year to give the Waves a 3-0 lead. Then, after a double play cleared the bases, Wills shot one to the same spot as Belk, deep and over the wall. After one inning of play, the Waves led 4-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Cougars answered back with a solo home run. They then scored three unanswered runs after the sun caused an error. After two innings of play, the Waves and Cougars were locked at four.

The Cougars got four more runs in the third, the bulk of which came from a three-run home run from Casey Jacobsen, his second long ball of the game, giving BYU an 8-4 lead after three.

In the fourth, the Waves responded when, after an Aharon Modlin single, Lutes blasted a ball into deep right field and over the fence, cutting the Cougars' lead to 8-6.

Pepperdine got another run in the fifth when Belk singled in McAfee, who doubled to start the inning. After four and a half, BYU led 8-7.

BYU scored four more times in fifth, extending their lead to 12-7 after five innings of play. They then added another in the sixth to push their lead to the final, 13-7 lead.

The Waves and Cougars are back at it for game two Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. PT.
