Waves' Remarkable Season Comes to a Close

LARAMIE, Wyo– The Pepperdine women's basketball team concluded their season with a 61-60 heartbreaker at the University of Wyoming. The Waves finish the 2018-2019 season at 22-12, marking the end of a remarkable season under second-year head coach Delisha Milton-Jones.

Pepperdine was down early but clawed back into contention through the last three quarters of the game. Wyoming kept the lead at the final buzzer, however, as a last-second Waves shot rolled off the rim.

BIG WAVES
·       Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J., Hillside HS) led all scorers with 26 points and seven rebounds, going 43 percent on the night. She finishes as the second-highest, single-season scorer in Pepperdine at 712 points and completes her decorated career as a Wave with awards such as a three-time first team West Coast Conference selection and the 2019 Player of the Year.
·       Malia Bambrick (Santa Clara, Calif., Bishop Alemany HS) had nine points, all of which were jump shots to keep the Waves alive.
·       Deezha Battle (Albuquerque, N.M./Cochise College) came in clutch yet again, this time off the drive and in the mid-range. She recorded eight points and five rebounds on the night.

GAME RECAP
Pepperdine started off on the drive, as Mia Satie struck first with a reverse lay-up. The Waves were up until the 5:40 mark in the first quarter when the Cowgirls began a 12-0 run after the first media timeout. In the second quarter, Yasmine Robinson-Bacote turned up the heat and had two back to back jumpers to claw the Waves out of the 12-point deficit. Deezha Battle warmed up as well, delivering four points to assist in the come-back.

Wyoming held a six-point lead heading into the second half, but the Waves stole the lead with 29 seconds left in the third, going up 42-41. Pepperdine fought through the fourth quarter, never getting down by more than six points at the 2:36 mark, coincidentally sparking a 4-0 run that tied the contest at 60-all.

Pepperdine fouled on a lay-up with nine seconds left, as Wyoming went 1-1 from the free throw line, putting the Cowgirls up one while giving possession back to the Waves. After consecutive time-outs by either team shaving off seconds from the clock, Pepperdine inbounded the ball at the free-throw-extended line with three seconds left, as Rose Pflug drove to the basket and put up a runner that rolled just off the rim as time expired.

The loss marks the last game for seniors Megan House and Robinson-Bacote in a Waves uniform.

Pepperdine will continue their success under head coach Delisha Milton-Jones. On her two seniors, she said, "I just want to give a special shout out to Megan House and [Robinson-Bacote]. The two of you have carried this program for a long time and without your contribution, we would not have made it this far."
"It's never easy when you fight so hard and fall short…but from where we started to where we are now, no one would've ever imagined that we would be in the position we were in," Milton-Jones continued. "They [the team] has trusted me, they have bought in and I'm so thankful for that."
