SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine baseball team got its first conference win on Saturday, defeating San Diego at Fowler Park, 8-7.
The Waves (7-7, 1-1 WCC) and Toreros (14-5,1-1 WCC) traded runs for three innings, but the Waves were able to keep the opposition from completing a comeback.
BIG WAVES
- Senior outfielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) had the go-ahead triple in the top of the eighth to give the Waves a 2-run lead. He went 2-for-4 on the night, with the two RBI.
- Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 2-for-5 including an RBI single in the third inning.
- Sophomore outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) had a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning to help retake the lead.
GAME RECAP
Like Friday's game, the Waves got on the board first, as Young had an RBI single to right field in the third inning, scoring
Cory Wills. In the home half of the inning, the Toreros got a run of their own to tie the game 1-1 after three complete innings.
In the fourth, Kanfer led off with a single, and
Aharon Modlin walked. Alexiades then came up and smoked a ball into left center field, scoring both Modlin and Kanfer to give the Waves a 3-1 lead.
The Toreros would again even the score in the bottom half of the fourth on an RBI single and a safety squeeze. After four full innings, the score was locked at 3.
Young led off the fifth inning with an infield single, and was moved to third on an error that allowed McAfee to reach first. Modlin then came up and smacked a ball into the outfield for a 2-RBI double, giving the Waves a 5-3 lead.
San Diego responded again in the bottom of the fifth, with a 2-run home run to tie the game at five going into the sixth.
Mitchell Dickson got his first collegiate hit in the eighth inning, a double down the line. McAfee was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Kanfer promptly hit a ball the other way, down into the right field corner, tripling Dickson and McAfee home to give the Waves a 7-5 lead.
After blanking the Toreros in the eighth, the Waves scored another run in the ninth on a Wills sacrifice fly, scoring
Duncan McKinnon, who doubled earlier in the inning. The Waves led 8-5 going into the last half inning of the game.
The Toreros made it interesting, as they scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but senior closer
Michael Mahony entered the game, finishing his second save of the year.
