PLAY-BY-PLAY
Doubles was tight from start to finish, and Rice grabbed the first edge, defeating the Waves on court three. Pepperdine would not be so easily overturned, though, as the Waves evened the doubles scoring after Ashley Lahey and Daria Kuczer put down Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova 7-5 on court two. On court one, #17 Jessica Failla and Anastasia Iamachkine then battled #53 Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova towards a 6-4 Waves win to give Pepperdine the 1-0 leading heading into singles.
In singles, the opposition countered with a two-set win in the No. 2 position to tie the overall and then pulled ahead by one with another two-set victory in the No. 4 position. Â
The Waves got back to winning ways on court five, as Daria Kuczer put down Linda Huang with a 6-1, 6-4 final mark to even the dual score 2-2. Then, #56 Lahey would down Victoria Smirnova after an absolute battle on court one, taking a 7-6 (3) victory in the first set before dominating the second 6-2 to give the Waves an opportunity to clinch with two matches still in action.
On court three, #61 Failla would be up to the task. After falling 6-4 in her first set to Anna Bowtell, she came back strong in the second with a 6-3 win to force a third. In the final set, she would show let-up, crushing her opponent with a 6-0 final mark to clinch the win for her team. Iamachkine's match on court six went unfinished, although she had the advantage when it was abandoned in the third set.
