#7 Women's Tennis to Play at ITA Indoor Championships

MALIBU, Calif. - The 7th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis heads to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships this Thursday-Sunday.

LOOKING AHEAD: After this weekend of heavy competition, the Waves will be back at home for a pair of matches against Arizona State on Friday the 15th and California on Saturday the 16th.
ITA NATIONAL TEAM INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Sixteen of the top Division I women's teams will compete at the Nordstrom Tennis Center and the Seattle Tennis Club in Seattle, Washington, in hopes of reaching the team indoor national championship. The four-day event begins on Thursday, February 7, and concludes on Sunday, February 10. The North Carolina Tar Heels are the defending National Team Indoors champion, having defeated the Waves 4-2 in the 2018 final.
The ITA Division I National Women's Team Indoor Championship is in its 32nd year of existence. Fifteen teams qualified for the event by winning their respective 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend four-team regional, while University of Washington received an automatic bid as the host site. The teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament over a four-day span to crown a national indoor champion. Each team is guaranteed three matches at the event.
THE FIELD: The top eight seeds in the National Women's Team Indoor Championship field were determined based on an unpublished ranking conducted by the National Ranking Committee. The remaining eight teams were placed into the draw by random selection. Teams were moved to avoid playing opponents in the first round already on their respective regular-season schedules.
The field in order of ranking competing are, No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 8 UCLA, No. 10 Oklahoma State, No. 12 Northwestern, No. 14 South Carolina, No. 24 Syracuse. Other teams competing in the championships are Ohio State, Louisiana State, North Carolina State, and tournament host Washington.
LAST YEAR AT ITA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Last year, the then-ranked #6 Waves made history by advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship match for the first time. The Waves started the tournament by taking down #12 Auburn 4-2, followed by a win over #7 Georgia Tech. To determine whether they reach the championship match, the Waves faced #2 Vanderbilt in the semi-finals. The Waves fought hard, beating the out-ranked Commodores 4-3. In the championship match, the Waves challenged #5 North Carolina, falling 2-4 to finish as runners-up at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
THE WAVES: Pepperdine opened the dual campaign 2-0 overall with sweeps over Denver and UNLV. Including tournament season, the Waves have posted a 65-30 singles record for a .684 winning percentage and a 27-15 doubles record for a .675 winning percentage.
In singles dual action, Evgeniya Levashova, Adrijana Lekaj, and Satsuki Takamura have all won two matches apiece. Overall, Levashova and Lekaj lead the team with 15 wins. Levashova also holds an impressive 9-3 record against nationally ranked opponents. Anastasia Iamachkine boasts a 10-5 overall record including tournament play.
In doubles dual play, Ashley Lahey and Levashova lead the Waves with a 2-0 record and have posted a 11-2 record including tournament play with a 4-1 output against ranked opponents. Jessica Failla and Iamachkine hold the next best doubles record of 9-3 including one win of the dual season so far. Dzina Milovanovic and Lekaj also have one win this dual campaign.
ORACLE/ITA RANKINGS: The first round of Oracle/ITA national team rankings was released on Jan. 23. The Waves moved up six spots to open the 2019 campaign ranked #7 nationally. After the completion of the fall season, the final singles and doubles rankings were released on Nov. 14. Three Waves were ranked in singles, as #17 Evgeniya Levashova, #28 Jessica Failla, and #106 Ashley Lahey each finished the fall nationally ranked. The Waves also posted two ranked doubles pairs with Lahey and Levashova holding the #1 position and Failla and Iamachkine holding the #43 spot.
ITA KICK-OFF WEEKEND IN REVIEW: The Waves dominated the courts in Malibu with a 4-0 sweep over UNLV in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Tournament. Pepperdine started off with doubles wins from the pair of Milovanovic and Lakej followed by a win from #1 ranked Levashova and Lahey. They clinched the match with singles wins from #17 ranked Levashova, Takamura, and Lekaj.
In the championship match of the tournament the Waves downed the Denver Pioneers 4-0 to win a bid to the ITA Indoor Championships. #1 Levashova and Lahey picked up their second doubles win of the weekend to start off the match, followed with #43 Failla and Iamachkine defeating their opponents 6-4. #17 Levashova, Takamura, and Lekaj all picked up a second singles to help the Waves to the win.
