Waves Fall to Sun Devils in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Pepperdine baseball team could not mount a comeback against undefeated Arizona State, falling to the Sun Devils, 4-2 in Tempe.

The Waves fall to 3-4 on the season after a 3-1 opening weekend, but look to turn their non-conference season around as they take on UCSB in an away-home-away series beginning on Friday.

GAME RECAP
The Sun Devils got off to a hot start, scoring on a solo home run in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead after two innings of play. They scored again in the fourth on an RBI-single to take a 2-0 lead.

The Waves answered back in the fifth when after a sacrifice bunt from Billy Cook, Alexiades scored from second on a throwing error, cutting the Sun Devil lead to 2-1 after four and a half innings.

In the seventh inning, Alexiades came up after a McKinnon double and poked a ball through the left side of the infield to score McKinnon from second base, tying the game at two runs apiece through six and a half.

Arizona State answered in the home half of the seventh with a 2-run home run to deep center field, retaking the lead at 4-2. The Waves tried to mount a comeback in the eighth when Charlie Welch hit a sacrifice fly, but the Waves only got the single run, falling to the Sun Devils 4-3.

The Waves have three games this weekend, all against UC Santa Barbara. Pepperdine will travel to Santa Barbara on Friday and Sunday, but will host its home-opener on Saturday. Friday's game will start at 2p.m., while both games on the weekend will begin at 1 p.m.

- Redshirt-Sophomore outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) went 2-for-3 on the day, driving one run in and scoring another.
- Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) continued the hot start to his collegiate career, going 2-for-4 on the day and improving his season batting average to .300.
- Redshirt-Junior infielder Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) had a single hit on the day, as well as having a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the seventh inning.
