MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team suffered its first West Coast Conference loss this season on Monday afternoon, falling to Brigham Young 65-47.
Barbara Sitanggan led the Waves with 12 points.
The Waves (7-5, 1-1 WCC) kept it close in the first half, but the Cougars (7-5, 2-0 WCC) broke the game open in the third quarter.
BIG WAVES
- Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) led the Waves as the only player in double figures. She had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
- Junior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks on the day.
- Senior guard Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) had seven points and four rebounds.
- Redshirt senior guard Hannah Friend (San Clemente, Calif./Sacramento State) had six points, two rebounds and two blocks.
PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves started the game hot, going on an 8-2 run to begin the first quarter. The Cougars took their first lead at 14-13 with two minutes left in the quarter. At the end of the first, the two teams traded baskets, with the Cougars eventually taking a 16-15 advantage into the second.
An 8-0 run to start the second gave the Cougars a 24-15 lead, which they would never relinquish. The Waves went on a 7-0 run to end the half, and trailed 30-26 after two quarters of play.
The second half was all Cougars, as BYU outscored Pepperdine 17-8 in the third. Fecske and
Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) each hit a three pointer in the quarter. The fourth quarter was more of the same, as BYU continued to drain shots, going up by as many as 18 to end the game.
KEY STATS
- It was a tale of two halves for the Waves, as they shot 35% in the first half compared to 28% in the second. In the third quarter, the Waves shot just 13%.
- The Waves shot the three well, making 36.8% of shots from beyond the arc. The Cougars made 35% from three.
- BYU controlled the boards, bringing down 41 rebounds compared to the Waves' 34.

The Waves head up North for their first road trip of WCC play. They will take on Saint Mary's on Jan. 2 and Pacific on Jan. 4. Both games will be broadcast via the WCC Network.
