Waves Nearly Complete Comeback in Boise

BOISE, Idaho – The Pepperdine women's basketball had a last-second shot to defeat Boise State on Sunday, but the shot sailed wide, and the Waves fell 76-74.

Malia Bambrick had 20 points for the Waves (6-4), who played their final non-conference game of the year against the Broncos (10-4, 2-0 Mountain West).
 
BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore guard Malia Bambrick (Santa Clarita, Calif./Bishop Alemany HS) led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 4-8 from beyond the arc. She also had three steals.
  • Junior forward Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) had 12 points and brought down nine boards.
  • Redshirt-freshman guard Jayla Ruffus-Milner (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) had nine points, and led the Waves with nine rebounds.
  • Senior guard Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) had eight points, and a team-high nine assists.

GAME RECAP
Pepperdine started off hot, as Fecske hit a three to start the game. Bambrick hit the Waves' final three baskets to end the first quarter with a 16-13 lead.

In the second, the Waves and Broncos traded baskets until Boise State tied the game at 27. The Broncos then went on a 7-point run to take a 34-7 lead. They went up by as many as eight in the second, and the Broncos took a 42-35 lead into the halftime break.

After the break, the Waves got two consecutive shots from Sitanggan and Bambrick to get the Waves to within two. After traded baskets, Pepperdine finished the quarter with two Sitanggan free throws and a layup from Cheyenne Givens to go into the final 10 minutes trailing 56-54.

The Waves took a four-point lead after three consecutive baskets to start the fourth. However, the Broncos came storming back on a 9-0 run to retake the lead 65-60 with six minutes to play. With three minutes left, Ashleen Quirke (Los Gatos, Calif./Foothill College) tied the game and a Bambrick three took the lead 72-69. After the Broncos responded with a three of their own, Jayla Ruffus-Milner gave the Waves a 2-point lead. The Broncos then hit a three and a free throw to take a 76-74 lead. Pepperdine had a chance to win the game on a Sitanggan bucket, but the shot fell short and wide, giving the Broncos the win.

  • The Waves shot well, shooting 40.8% from the field. The Broncos shot 45.6%.
  • The Broncos shot marginally better from three, shooting 33.3% compared to the Waves' 29.4%.
  • Boise State out-rebounded the Waves 45-39.

The Waves begin West Coast Conference play after the Holiday break, hosting San Diego on Dec. 28. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
