PLAY-BY-PLAY
Hana Lishman led off the Waves offensive to open the match, posting an ace while also pushing Pepperdine to a 6-0 run to set an early lead. After holding the advantage towards a 10-5 lead, the Waves allowed the opposition back in to tie things up with a 5-0 run. After a back-and-forth battle ensued, including a 13-13 tie, kills from
Shannon Scully,
Rachel Ahrens and
Hannah Frohling put the Waves back on top. More smashes throughout the set pushed Pepperdine to a 25-20 set win.
Â
In the second, the Waves once again pulled ahead early, 6-4, but the Broncos were close behind, again tying thing up at 10's. Pepperdine surged ahead to a 16-12 lead with more kills from
Tarah Wylie and Scully. After both teams reached the 22-point range, a kill from Scully kept the Waves positive. Although SCU tied the set at 23-23, a kill from Frohling and attack error from across the net shut the set down in the Waves' favor with a 25-23 set score.
Â
Pepperdine had momentum in the third set, but Santa Clara had an early drive towards the lead. The Broncos went up 12-8 early on, and continued to a 14-9 lead before the Waves would start to close the gap. A block collaboration from Wylie and Ahrens and back-to-back kills from Frohling and Ahrens earned a 14-14 tie, and another pair of kills from Ahrens and Frohling, followed up by a block from Wylie and
Isabel Zelaya for the 17-16 lead.Â
Â
The set remained close throughout, but a kill from Wylie to start things off kept the Waves ahead by at least one point through the rest of the set. In the final moments, a kill from Frohling and Wylie put the Waves in a position to close, and the middle would continue with yet another smash to close the set 25-23 and complete the Waves' sweep.
