Ahrens Ties Record; Pepperdine Downs Dons in Straight-Sets on the Road

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team put in a powerful performance against San Francisco on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym, amassing 25-13, 25-23 and 25-19 set scores en route to the team's seventh-consecutive West Coast Conference victory.

Shannon Scully led the Waves (18-10, 14-3 WCC) over the Dons (8-20, 4-13 WCC) with 16 kills on a .412 success rate and 17 digs.  Each Hannah Frohling and Tarah Wylie amassed six blocks, while Frohling added three aces and Wylie tabbed two.

Rachel Ahrens tied the Pepperdine women's volleyball all-time record for most aces in a single-season during the rally scoring era after posting one ace in the match.  She now has 48 this season, and has the possibility of taking over the record completely with one more.  The record has stood since 2003 when Katie Wilkins amassed 48 aces in 111 sets played.

AAA: AHRENS ASICS ACES
With her one ace tallied in the match, sophomore Rachel Ahrens has tied the Pepperdine women's volleyball career record books for most aces in a single season during the rally scoring era.  She is now one-away from overtaking the record with one match left in the regular season.  The record has stood since 2003 when Katie Wilkins amassed 48 aces in 111 sets played.

Her 0.45 aces/set also ranks 2nd in the single-season record books for best aces/set output in the rally scoring era, while her 0.37 career aces/set output also leads the Pepperdine career records.  The aces/set career record currently sits at 0.36 from Lauren Agajanian in 1993-94 when she amassed 38 aces in 107 sets played.  *Aces/set records subject to change throughout the final matches of the 2019 season.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
After going back-and-forth for the first few points of action, near back-to-back blocks from Tarah Wylie with either Hannah Frohling or Isabel Zelaya helped push the Waves to a 9-4 lead early.  During that time period, Rachel Ahrens also tabbed her 48th ace of the season to tie the all-time single-season record.  Pepperdine would maintain the momentum through the entire first set, seeing five smashes from Shannon Scully in six plays for an 18-9 advantage.  After the Waves took a 22-13 lead, the Dons would not score again, and a final block from Wylie and Frohling, followed up by a Frohling smash closed the set 25-13 in the Waves' favor.

The second set was a different story, however, as San Francisco found their legs and came out for a 12-8 lead.  The Waves stayed close throughout and a pair of aces from Wylie late in the action tied the set at 16-apiece.  The Dons stayed in it, but the energy clearly shifted to the Waves' side of the court, and big kills from Wylie and Scully kept Pepperdine in the lead.  The last tied score would be 19-19, before the Waves took the lead and used it with a final pair of Wylie kills to close the set with a 25-23 win for the 2-0 advantage heading in to the third set.

Pepperdine wasn't messing around in the third, going on a 6-0 run to start things off with four blocks from Alli O'Harra in Frohling in that time.  The squad used it to lead 10-3 and 15-6 throughout, and continued with smashes from Scully and two-straight aces from Frohling to pull ahead 23-15 late in the action.  A final kill from Kayleigh Hames put the set away 25-19 for the Waves to complete the sweep and the Waves' 7th-straight win.
