PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves came out strong in the first set and rolled towards a quick 11-8 lead early on with blocks from
Tarah Wylie,
Alli O'Harra and
Shannon Scully. A strong service output from
Hannah Frohling, featuring more Wylie, Scully and Wylie,
Isabel Zelaya block collaborations towards a 19-10 lead. Scully found the floor a few more times and
Rachel Ahrens helped the cause en route to a 25-14 set win.
Pepperdine continued the advantage into the second set, pulling ahead 12-8 with kills from Frohling and Scully early on. The opposition was able to close the gap and tie things up at 12-12, but the Waves stayed playing tough. Each side went point-for-point on the way to a 22-22 tied score late in the action. The Pilots pulled ahead first 23-22 and then again at 24-23, but a kill from Wylie and an ace from Frohling helped flip the script and put the Waves up by one 25-24. A final attack error from across the net helped the cause and Pepperdine took the 26-24 set win to pull ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Waves were ready to close things up in the third set, and after a 10-10 tied score, multiple blocks from Wylie pushed the team to a 14-10 lead. Pepperdine kept the kills coming towards a 20-15 lead and the Waves had a comfortable lead to settle into. After more kills from Frohling and Wylie found the floor, Pepperdine secured the 25-20 final set score and the three-set sweep over Portland.
