PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first set opened with a see-saw battle, but after an 8-8 tied score, the Waves started to break away after
Rachel Ahrens plastered an ace down on the floor. Pepperdine kept building on the momentum with blocks from
Tarah Wylie and
Isabel Zelaya. Kills form Wylie and
Shannon Scully forced the first SMC timeout of the match with a 14-9 advantage. More blocks from
Alli O'Harra with either
Hannah Frohling or Ahrens helped the cause late in the action and the Waves to a 20-12 lead. The Waves kept pounding with more kills from Wylie and a
Hana Lishman ace, and another late block from Wylie and Zelaya put the home team in a position to close. Wylie would deliver the final kill of the set for a 25-19 victory and the lead heading into the second.
The second set began a little differently from the first, with the opposing team gaining the first 9-6 lead. The Waves battled back, however, with three nearly-consecutive smashes from Scully for a 10-10 tie and continued to edge out the Gaels with a Frohling, O'Harra block collaboration. Ahrens banked one off a player for another ace in the middle of the set and a strong service output from Frohling in the next rotation had Saint Mary's on the edge. In the final moments O'Harra and Scully each found the floor for the 25-20 set win and the 2-0 advantage going into the third.
With the two previous sets going the home team's way, the Waves came out strong in the third and intent on closing things down quickly. Kills from Ahrens, Frohling and Wylie opened things up 4-1 early and more kills from Wylie, O'Harra and Ahrens continued the lead towards a 9-5 advantage. A Scully, Wylie block collaboration helped the cause at the 15-11 mark to force a timeout, but the Gaels rallied marginally after. After a 17-16 lead, Pepperdine buckled down and put some more smashes on the floor to regain the cushion. A block from O'Harra and Ahrens continued the Waves rolling and a final kill from Frohling and solo rejection from Wylie finished the set 25-20 and the match with a sweep.
