MALIBU, Calif.— Four members of the Pepperdine women's basketball team had double-digit points on Thursday as the Waves defeated San Diego 88-65 in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Monique Andriuolo had a career-high 14 points.
The Waves (12-8, 6-4 WCC) shot 57.1% from the field, and an incredible 61.5% from three while holding the Toreros (8-13, 1-9 WCC) to just 40% and 18.2%.
BIG WAVES
- Monique Andriuolo (Melbourne, Australia/Maribyrnong Secondary College) had a career night, shooting 6-9 from the field and 2-2 from three to score a game-high 14 points.
- Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) also had 14 points, 11 of which were in the first half.
- Rose Pflug (Eugene, Ore./Sunset HS) had 13 points, shooting 4-8 from the field and 1-3 from beyond the arc. She also added four free throws.
- Deezha Battle (Albuquerque, N.M./Cochise College) had 12 points, and added a team-high eight assists.
KEY STATS
- The Waves had 47 points come from the bench, and held the Toreros' bench to just 20 points.
- Pepperdine also held the advantage at the glass, bringing down 35 rebounds compared to 30 from San Diego.
- Twenty-one of the Waves' baskets were assisted on, compared to just 12 of the Toreros'.
GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a hot start, going on a 10-2 run to start the game, and never cooled down, leading for 38 of the 40 minutes. Another run, this time a 12-5 run gave the Waves a 29-13 lead going into the second quarter. Robinson-Bacote had all 11 of her first-half points in the first quarter.
After the Toreros scored the first points of the second quarter, another 6-0 run from the Waves gave them their largest lead of the first half at 23 points. Pflug had nine of her points in the second, including all four of her free throws, leading the Waves to a 48-30 lead going into halftime.
After the break, it looked as though San Diego was going to mount a comeback after they scored the first five points of the quarter. The Waves, however, scored five straight points of their own, and did not let up. After the Toreros got to within 13 points with just two minutes left in the quarter, the Waves ended the third on a 6-0 run and took a 69-50 lead into the final 10 minutes. Andriuolo and Battle each had 7 points in the quarter.
To start the final ten minutes of play, the Waves built upon their lead and took their largest lead of the game at 27 points with three minutes left to play. San Diego chipped away at the lead, but could not mount a miraculous comeback, as the Waves finished the game with a 23 point lead.
