Waves Fall to Saint Mary’s in Moraga

MORAGA, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's basketball team had the game's highest scorer in Yasmine Robinson-Bacote, but ultimately fell to Saint Mary's 79-68 on Thursday night. Robinson-Bacote had 22 points.

The Waves (11-7, 5-3 WCC) had four players with double-digit points, but could not overcome a fourth-quarter surge from the Gaels (12-7, 5-3 WCC).

BIG WAVES
  • Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) led all scorers with 22 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.
  • Rose Pflug (Eugene, Ore./Sunset HS) had 15 points, shooing a near-perfect 3-4 from beyond the arc.
  • Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) scored 13 points, brought down eight rebounds and had a team-leading three assists.
GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a hot start, scoring the first six points of the game, thanks to three-pointers from Sitanggan and Deezha Battle (Albuquerque, N.M./Cochise College). Saint Mary's tied the game at 15 with just a minute to play in the quarter, before the first of three 3-pointers from Pflug dropped right before the quarter ended, giving the Waves a 19-17 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Gaels started the second quarter on a 6-0 run, but a 7-0 run from Pepperdine gave the Waves a one-point lead. At the very end of the quarter, Sitanggan drove to the basket and was fouled as the buzzer sounded, and she was awarded two shots, which she promptly sank to give the Waves a 36-33 lead going into the locker room.

In the third quarter, the Waves and Gaels played tight basketball, with the Waves keeping ahead of the Gaels until the final few minutes in the quarter. After a small run, Saint Mary's took a 59-56 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play, a lead they would not relinquish. A 9-0 run from the Gaels with just three minutes left proved to be too much for the Waves, and Saint Mary's took their largest lead of the night at 15 before ultimately defeating the Waves by 11 points.
