Women's Golf Second at Golfweek Conference Challenge

WOLCOTT, Colorado – The Pepperdine women's golf team earned its second straight second-place result to start the 2018-19 season as the Waves, led by Hira Naveed's fourth-place finish, wrapped up play at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Wednesday.
 
The Waves have won this event four times in its 10-year history and this was their third straight second-place result. The Waves shot a 1-over 865 (287-287-291) at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club. UCLA ran away with the event, shooting a 32-under 832.
 
PLAYER SCORES
  • Senior Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia), who was coming off a win at the season-opening McGuire Invitational, had another terrific showing with a fourth-place result. She had a 6-under 210 (71-70-69). All six of her rounds this season have been below par. Her final round 3-under included eight birdies. She had 16 for the tournament, tied for second most. Naveed was the top player in the field on the par-5s, scoring a combined 8-under.
  • Senior Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawai'i/IMG Academy) ended with a 1-under 71 to move up to a tie for 13th with a 1-over 217 (72-74-71). She started her round with two birdies and finished with three.
  • Junior Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) also tied for 13th with a 1-over 217 (70-74-73). She had an eagle on the par-5 15th hole and five birdies today.
  • Senior Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) took 31st at 223 (74-71-78). She had three birdies on Wednesday.
  • Freshman Kathrine Chan (Richmond, B.C./Canada) tied for 52nd at 229 (78-72-79). She had four birdies in her final round.

Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said: "We are happy to start the season with two second-place finishes against a strong group of teams from across the country. We'll continue to work on eliminating a few bad holes, and prepare the team for more success at Washington and Stanford. Hira is playing well and has all parts of her game ready for a great season."

The Waves' third of four fall tournaments will be at Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on October 9-10.
