Women's Soccer Suffers Another 1-0 Defeat

LUBBOCK, Texas – The #18 Pepperdine women's soccer team suffered its second straight 1-0 road loss to start the season, this time falling to Texas Tech on Sunday evening.

The Red Raiders (2-0) scored a goal in the third minute, and the Waves (0-2) spent the rest of the game unable to find an equalizer. Pepperdine managed five shots, while Texas Tech kept the Waves' defense busy with 14 shots, and forced redshirt freshman goalkeeper Zoe Clevely (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) to make seven saves.

The Waves' best attacking chance came in the 79th minute when senior defender Michelle Maemone (San Jose, Calif./The King's Academy) took a well-placed shot from well outside the box that forced a diving save by Texas Tech goalkeeper Marissa Zucchetto, though the ball was free for a moment in front of the goal. A Pepperdine attacker in the vicinity looked to have an opportunity to poke the ball in, but Zucchetto beat her to the ball by a half-second.

GOALS

Texas Tech 3': The Red Raiders executed a successful counterattack early in the game, starting out of the defense and moving the ball up into midfield for Kirsten Davis. She slid a ball to her left in front of Jade King, who got ahead of the defense and found the back of the net.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "We faced a really talented Texas Tech team tonight, and they were highly motivated to avenge last year's loss at our place. To their credit, I've not seen a soccer team start with that much fire since we played UNC in the Sweet 16 in 2005. They were a Texas tornado of pressure, and it was impressive to witness.

"Our girls know that in order to compete at this level you have to start and maintain a level of sharpness and fire in your play, and we didn't start the first half with that sharpness or fire. A big positive, however, is how came into the game in the second half, showed some signs of life, and played with a determination that has come to be associated with our program. We look forward to getting back to work on Tuesday."
