SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Pepperdine's Hira Naveed qualified for the NCAA Women's Golf Championships as an individual thanks to her tie for sixth place at the NCAA San Francisco Regional on Wednesday.
To finish in the top six and advance as a team, the Waves needed to mostly duplicate their magic of Tuesday, when they shot a 3-under 285 that was the best score of the day. They entered Wednesday just two shots out of sixth place but unfortunately a rough start to the third round dropped the squad out of contention. Pepperdine ended up in 11th place with a three-day score of 876 (297-285-294) at the par-72 TPC Harding Park, seven shots out of sixth.
The top three players from non-qualifying teams also advanced to the NCAA Championships, and Naveed was the second out of three with a 5-under 211, two shots clear of the third individual. The 54-hole score of 5-under establishes a Pepperdine record in NCAA Regional play.
Pepperdine, which was the #13 seed, finished two spots better than its seed and posted wins against #33 North Carolina State and #43 California. The Waves were playing in their 20th consecutive NCAA Regional.
"The players did a great job competing over 54 holes," Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. "Though we came up short of qualifying for nationals, I'm very proud of them. Hira played solid all three days. She continues to work hard to create consistency in all parts of her game. We look forward to some great scores at the NCAA Championships."
