Three Waves Continue at NCAA Singles Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. â€" The Pepperdine women's tennis team excelled on the singles courts at Wake Forest Tennis Complex Thursday morning, finishing day two of the NCAA Singles Championships with three Waves still in action and advancing to the round of 16.

Due to the wins Luisa Stefani, Ashley Lahey and Mayar Sherif will end the 2018 season as ITA All-Americans in singles, regardless of their finishes this week. Sherif and Stefani also paired up in doubles, falling in a tough three-set match-up in the opening round.

#22 Mayar Sherif would be the first to close her round of 32 match-up, defeating #19 Carla Touly of Florida State with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win. With the victory, Sherif will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 which also earns her ITA All-American singles honors for the second-consecutive season.

#27 Luisa Stefani closed up shop next with a two-set win over #33 Jada Hart of UCLA. She dominated the first set 6-3, before the opposition pulled ahead in the second set. Stefani fought back to tie things up and continued on towards the 7-5 victory to advance to the NCAA singles round of 16 and earn her third ITA All-American singles honor in the past three seasons.

After nearly a three hour match, #17 Ashley Lahey would be the third Wave to advance to the round of 16 and earn ITA All-American singles honors for the second-straight year. She opened her match against #23 Michaela Bayerlova of Washington State by gritting out a 7-6 (4) first set win. Although her opponent collected a 6-3 second set win, Lahey buckled down and defeated her with a 6-4 third set win for the overall victory.

After singles finished, the Waves jumped right in to doubles with #13 Sherif and Stefani going head-to-head with #9 Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke. After falling behind with a 6-2 first set loss, the Waves rallied with a 6-3 second set win to force a third set. The duo fell behind with a 1-6 deficit early, but once again closed the gap to 6-7. The opposition had the edge, however, and closed the match out with a 10-7 final tiebreak set score.

  • With the wins today, all three Waves, Mayar Sherif, Ashley Lahey and Luisa Stefani, will finish the 2018 season as ITA All-Americans in singles. This is Stefani's third-straight season as an All-American in singles and it is the second honor for both Sherif and Lahey.
  • Mayar Sherif has won her last 16-consecutive matches. She has posted a 32-5 overall record this season, with a 9-3 output against ranked opponents.
  • Ashley Lahey has gone 24-4 overall this season with an 11-3 record against ranked competition and five wins in her last five matches.
  • Luisa Stefani has collected a 15-3 overall record this season with a 7-2 output against ranked opposition.
  • Sherif and Stefani finished the season 16-4 overall this season with a 4-4 record against ranked opponents.
