Four Waves Honored With Major Postseason Awards

May 22, 2018

MALIBU, Calif. - Four members of the West Coast Conference-champion Pepperdine baseball team took home major postseason awards, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Jordan Qsar was named WCC Player of the Year, Jonathan Pendergast Pitcher of the Year and Cooper Chandler Freshman of the Year. Head Coach Rick Hirtensteiner was also named Coach of the Year. All awards were voted on by the 10 head coaches.

Qsar and Pendergast were both named to the All-WCC First team, along with Matthew Kanfer (Playa del Ray, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.). Along with Chandler, Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) was named to the second team. Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) was named to the WCC All-Freshman team, as was Chandler.

Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) has been dominant as a hitter this year in WCC play with a .330 batting average, good for second on the team. He also had 11 home runs on the year, good for second in the conference. Qsar led the conference in RBI with 59. A dual-threat athlete, Qsar also had outstanding numbers from the pitching rubber. He had a 3.44 ERA with seven saves (5th in conference) as the Waves' closer. Qsar is Pepperdine's first Player of the year since 2012 when Joe Sever took home the award and 13th overall winner.

Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) had to step up in the face of adversity after starter Wil Jensen went down with a season-ending injury, and step up he did. The junior righty had a phenomenal season on the mound, going 7-4 with a 2.70 ERA, good for sixth in conference. He won his last seven starts, going at least seven innings in each of them. Pendergast is the Waves' 16th WCC Pitcher of the Year and the third in the last five years. The last Wave to win the award was Pepperdine great A.J. Puckett in 2016.

Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) burst onto the WCC scene just this year and didn't let the title of freshman slow him down. The righty went 5-3 on the year with a respectable 4.14 ERA. He shone in WCC play however, going 5-1 with a miniscule 2.72 ERA. The 1-2 punch of Chandler and Pendergast resulted in a six-series win streak for the Waves prior to the last week of the season, helping lead the Waves to clinch the regular-season championship. Chandler is Pepperdine's 11th overall freshman of the year and the first since Barry Enright in 2005.

In his third year at the helm, Hirtensteiner (Pepperdine '89) is the 14th Coach of the Year in program history. With the 29 victories this year, he improved his head coaching record at Pepperdine to 78-78. Hirtensteiner is also a former WCC Player of the Year, winning the award in 1989.

Kanfer was second on the team in batting average, hitting .312 on the year. This is his second All-Conference award, being named to the All-Freshman Team in 2016. McAfee led the team in doubles with 17, good for third in conference. He was named to the All-Freshman Team last year. Belk finds his name on the All-Conference team for the first time after taking a redshirt year last year. He led the team with a .316 batting average, and added 50 hits along with 10 doubles.

The Waves begin the WCC Tournament on Thursday as the No. 1 seed against San Francisco. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on theW.tv.
