SANTEE, California " The Pepperdine women's golf team ended up on the wrong side of the closest West Coast Conference championships finish in history and the tournament's first-ever playoff on Wednesday.

Both BYU and Pepperdine finished play with identical scores of 900 at the par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club, but the Cougars would go on to win their third consecutive league title.

All five players took part in the playoff, which was contested on hole number 10. Four of the five scores were counted, and BYU came up with a total of 17 strokes to Pepperdine's 18.

The Waves had a one-stroke lead after the first round and a five-shot lead after the second round. The lead grew to double-digits midway through the third round before the Cougars came storming back with a flurry of birdies on the back nine. BYU took the lead late, but a pair of birdies by Tatiana Wijaya on 16 and 18 helped get the Waves back into contention.

Pepperdine has won 17 of the 22 league tournaments ever contested, and this was the Waves' fourth second-place finish.
