PLAY-BY-PLAY
The first quarter of the 2018-19 season was relatively successful for the Waves. Sitanggan led the way for all scorers with six points. The Waves went up early and led the whole way through the quarter. Fecske hit the first of her four three pointers to start the game off. At the end of quarter buzzer, the Waves held the 16-13 lead. In the second, the Rainbow Wahine started with a 9-2 run to take a 22-18 lead. With 2:35 left in the half, the Waves trailed 30-23, but went on a small run of their own, ending the half trailing 32-30.
After halftime, both teams came out playing well. The Wahine had the edge early in the quarter, but the Waves fought back in the middle minutes to keep the game to within two points. Fecske led the Waves in scoring in the third with seven points, including a single three pointer. After three quarters of play, Hawaii led 51-49. The game stayed close in the fourth, coming down to the wire. After two free throws from Hawaii to break a 62-62 tie, the Waves had 14 seconds to play with after a missed layup from Hawaii. Coming off of a timeout, the Waves ran a wheel play, getting the ball to Fecske in the corner for an open look to take the lead on a three point shot. Fecske buried the three to give the Waves a one-point lead. Hawaii had a decent look, but missed a layup as time expired, giving the Waves the victory.
QUOTABLE
"We knew we were coming into the lions den when we came out here," said Head Coach Delisha Milton-Jones. "Tonight we really had to rely on our defense to pull us through and give us the chance to win the game.
"I knew if they came out in man-to-man, that I had the right play to run, and I knew who I wanted to run it with," said Milton-Jones about the last sequence which gave the Waves the game-winning three. "Paige is a gamer. She wants the big-time shot and lives for those moments. She got it done for us tonight."
