LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 7 Pepperdine men's water polo team had four different players score in the Golden Coast Conference semifinal matchup with Long Beach State. The Waves fell to the 49ers 5-4.
The Waves (15-11) and the 49ers (12-11) both played phenomenal defense, allowing goals only in the second and third quarters.
GAME RECAP
The first quarter was a defensive stalemate, with redshirt freshman goalie John Claude Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) getting two of his 13 saves in the quarter. Neither team scored, and the game went into the second quarter in a 0-0 tie.
Long Beach started the scoring, getting the first goal of the game a minute into the second quarter. Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) equalized just a minute and a half later, but Long Beach had the last goal of the half, taking a 2-1 lead into half time.
Sean Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif./St. Francis HS) scored two minutes in to the third quarter tying the game at 2 before Long Beach retook the 3-2 lead. The Waves and 49ers traded goals again, with Sam Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) scoring just 12 seconds after the 49ers took the 3-2 lead. Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) scored the final goal of the quarter for the Waves with 49 seconds left in the quarter. Long Beach scored once more to take a 5-4 lead into the final period of play.
The fourth quarter was much like the first quarter, with defense preventing any goals. The Waves had a good chance in the last possession of the game after a 49er was ejected. Pepperdine controlled the ball until the clock wound down and a shot sailed over the cage, sealing the victory for the 49ers.
