Men's Hoops Drops First Road Game at Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colorado – The Pepperdine men's basketball team kept its first road game of the season close, but a more experienced Northern Colorado squad pulled away for an 88-80 victory on Tuesday night.

The Waves (1-1) led by one with eight minutes left, but the Bears (2-0), coming off a 26-win season and a CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship, rallied for the victory.

BIG WAVES
  • Junior forward Kameron Edwards (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Etiwanda HS), who missed the season opener while recovering from a concussion, had team highs of 22 points and nine rebounds in his season debut.
  • Sophomore guard Colbey Ross (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest HS) had 14 points and four assists in his Colorado homecoming.
  • Sophomore guard Jade' Smith (Oakland, Calif./St. Joseph Notre Dame HS) had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals before fouling out.
  • Junior forward Darnell Dunn (Kinston, N.C./Kinston HS/Miami Dade JC) had nine points and five rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Darryl Polk Jr. (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS) contributed nine points.
KEY STATS
  • The Waves shot both 44.4% on two-pointers (20-for-45) and three-pointers (8-for-18).
  • Northern Colorado shot better from distance (13-for-30, 43.3%) than they did on two-pointers (12-for-29, 41.4%), and finished at 42.4% overall.
  • The Waves were outrebounded 45-32. They forced 17 turnovers and only committed 11.
  • The final margin was almost equal to the difference in the number of free throws made. UNC went 25-for-32, the Waves were at 16-for-23.
  • UNC's Jordan Davis was a handful, as he scored a game-high 32 points. He was one of four Bears in double-figures.
PLAY BY PLAY

The Waves led for a significant portion of the first half, although the Bears went into the break with a 43-40 lead. Pepperdine led early, though UNC took its first lead at 12-11. A Kessler Edwards three-pointer gave the Waves their biggest lead at 20-14 with under 10 minutes left. It was later 36-32 in the Waves' favor with 2:43 left before the Bears went on a 7-0 run.

The Bears left 59-54 with under 12 minutes to play, but the Waves kept UNC scoreless for the next 4 1/2 minutes and an 8-0 run put Pepperdine ahead 61-59 with eight minutes left after a Kameron Edwards basket.

But UNC asserted itself with two three-pointers in an 8-0 run to make it 67-61, and the Waves wouldn't lead again. The lead grew to 11 at 80-69 and 82-71, although Pepperdine closed the gap to four in the final minute.
