Waves Finish Meet With USD, LMU With a Victory

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pepperdine women's swim and dive team picked up where it left off yesterday by defeating Loyola Marymount in the second and final day of competition with both LMU and San Diego.

The Waves defeated the Lions by a score of 152-141, but fell to the Toreros 203-96.

The divers had yet another great day with Taylor Basin once again taking the top spot in both events. She won the first 1-meter dive with a score of 243.37, just four points ahead of second place, and 183.67 points in the second event. Ali North took third place in the first event and second place in the second. "Our divers had another great day" said Head Coach Joe Spahn. "Taylor swept both events for the second day in a row, and all three (Basin, Ali North and Paulina Holmberg) improved their scores from yesterday.Â

Pepperdine had two first place finishes in races on Saturday. Amy Griffin won the 100 free with a time of 54.10 and Julianna Chan won the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.94.

Other solid finishes on the day for the Waves included a third-place finish in the 200 free for Sammie Slater (1:58.68), a third-place finish in the 200 back for Trinity Ishikawa (2:10.76), a second-place finish in the 200 breast for Lauren Allard (2:30.05) and a second-place finish in the 400 free relay for Slater, Griffin, Caroline Boone and Paige Brackett (3:37.70).

"Our breaststroke group is swimming lights out right now" said Spahn. "Juju (Chan) lead the 100 bresast from start to finish.
"Our team really buckled down in the second half fo the meet. We needed some big swims to come back and beat LMU. Amy Griffin started us off with a gutsy 100 free, leading from start to finish. Trinity (Ishikawa) and Cassie (Anderson) put themselves out there in the 200 backstroke. Lauren Allard, Anna Reikhof and Juju Chan went 1, 2, and 3 against LMU to put us back ahead.Â
"We took some big steps as a team today. When the pressure was on, our ladies laid everything on the line for each other. This team is doing some special things."

The Waves will be back in action Friday. Nov. 2 when they travel to Cal State Bakersfield.
